The limitations of conventional screening methods are getting an increasing amount of attention as the evolution of breast imaging shifts its focus on the latest development: dedicated cone beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT). Our Vera by Koning Breast CT device was FDA -approved to provide 3D images of the breast for diagnostic purposes in 2015, and in accordance, a study by Ma et al. concludes that CBBCT features do indeed have distinctive promise for screening breast cancer and preventative care.

If we were to start designing an imaging system today for early detection of breast cancer, the current method of compression 2-Dimensional mammography would certainly not be the first choice. Modern requirements would include low radiation dose and some form of 3D imaging that would not require painful compression of each breast, sometimes more than once. CBBCT provides all these modern benefits, eliminates many of the well documented limitations of FFDM and DBT and stands as an effective and efficient alternative to old modalities.

Why Vera?

  • The breast is a 3D structure, where 2D imaging can be subjective and often leads to additional imaging.
  • Compression increases problematic tissue overlap.
  • Less costly.
  • Mammography has a higher rate of false positives and false negatives.
  • Shorter scan time.
  • Improved patient comfort, no compression and no hands-on manipulation of the breast.
  • Women deserve better!

As we continue to expand access to our device, read more about the correlation between CBBCT features and prognostic staging in breast cancer here.
